A typical day with Skylar.

Many have also asked about how Skylar deals with her condition on a day to day basis. Here are the answers to some of the most-asked questions.

How/what can she eat?
Skylar's diet consists of mostly soft or mashed foods although she can eat some semi-solid items. This girl loves veggie bacon, bananas, pancakes, and french fries! She also likes yogurt and Pediasure which help with her protein and calcium intake.

How will she wear dentures?
Skylar will require multiple sets of dentures as she grows into an adult. Because she has little lower jaw bone to hold the dentures, she will need to have magnets implanted into the bone she does have. This will help to hold the dentures securely in place.

What does Skylar's family do to keep her cool in warm weather?
Unfortunately, Sky spends limited time outside in the summer. If she is outside, she usually stays in a shade and LOVES splashing around in a little wading pool! They also make sure to keep her well hydrated. Skylar's family would like to eventually purchase her a cooling vest so she can spend more time outside in the warm months and participate in outdoor activities just like other children. These vests are expensive, are not usually covered by insurance, and she will need several as she grows.

Will Skylar wear a wig?
Whether she decides to wear a wig or not is totally her preference. Many children with ectodermal dysplasia do not have any hair. Skylar does have some pretty blonde hair, but it is very fragile, breaks easily, and therefore doesn't grow as fast as other little girls. We really think she is beautiful just like she is!
